Alexandria Community Services Board- The Alexandria CSB is in need of preschool presenters to deliver the 15 minute Al's Pals curriculum to preschool children in Alexandria two times per week from October 2007 through mid -June 2008 (flexibility for vacations).  Through the use of puppet-led discussions, songs, pictures and books, Al and his puppet pals help children to develop personal, emotional and social skills, which form the building blocks for future success. Alexandria Health Department- Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program- August Assistant/ Curriculum Researcher for the month of August we engage the youth in "Wild Things" camp. Assist each week while exploring nature as well as learn about the connection between humans and nature. Additional activities will teach team building skills. Board of Lady Managers, Alexandria Hospital Gift Shop- Greet the Hospital staff and visitors in the gift shop, process sales by operating cash register and credit card machine, restock merchandise as needed (no heavy lifting required), and occasionally take phone orders for flowers, sold in the gift shop, to be delivered to patients. Computer C.O.R.E.- Help our adult low-income students learn to use the computer, Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel. Inspire them to continue learning to improve their job skills and reach their goals! Review lesson materials before classes and ensure student attendance in order to graduate. Teachers cover curriculum as scheduled making sure students understand new concepts, and inspiring students to continue practicing and learning on their own. Contact:Susan Townsend, 703-931-7346

Gadsby's Tavern Museum - Do you believe learning can happen outside the classroom?  Do you want to help bring history to life for area students?  Then help lead school field trip programs at Gadsby's Tavern Museum!  Hundreds of school children visit Gadsby's Tavern Museum is every year.  Volunteers work in teams to guide Kindergarten through 7th grade groups through the museum.  Training is provided (both for tour content and working with children).  Contact: Michele Longo, 703-838-4242

Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria- Coordinate family dinner for 20 classes in 2007-2008 semester of the Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria.  Use the existing list of restaurant donors to arrange for family dinners for approximately 35 people.  Coordinate with volunteers to assist with pickup, delivery and service of dinners preceding classes once per week for twenty weeks beginning in the fall of 2008 and ending in May of 2009.  Contact: Fay D. Wright to Read -Tutor/Mentors work one-on-one with a 1st - 5th grade child, referred to the program by Alexandria City Public School teachers.Tutors meet with their child once a week, in the evening or on the weekend for an hour, at a location designated by the volunteer and parent/guardian.
Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age, attend an orientation, thoroughly pass an FBI fingerprint background check, attend a training session and commit to a full school year if possible. Contact: Heather Miles, 703-549-0111

Young Life Alexandria- A  Christian leader becomes friends with teenagers in Alexandria, participates in weekly events. There are also MANY opportunities for behind-the-scenes help, including encouragement of volunteers and administration help. Contact: John Kilmartin, 703-822-1658

Special Events Volunteers Needed

Alexandria Volunteer Bureau, Alexandria’s Big Event- The Alexandria Volunteer Bureau is organizing its 2nd annual youth service day-- the Big Event. Adult Team Leaders are needed to facilitate team building exercise the morning of the event,  make sure members arrive on time to assigned work site, help supervise team members while at work site, and make sure team members arrive on time to wrap up party. The Annual Walk to Fight Breast Cancer - Staffing registration tables at weekend promotional events throughout the City of Alexandria and greater metropolitan region in September and October. General Aid needed to assist the day of the event: Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Cameron Run Regional Park.  Volunteers are needed at 5:30 am. until 10am in shifts. All onsite volunteers should expect jobs to be physical in nature, including walking, light lifting, and bending. Contact: Melissa Villacorta at the Alexandria Office on Women 703-838-5030

Dash For Dad 10k – General Aid on race day to Register runners, helping them fill out the registration forms, pay their entry fees and ensuring they have their bib numbers, goodie bags, and T-shirts. Hand out water during the race or food after the race. Course Marshalls needed to keep the runners on the course, keeping cars off the course. Split Timers needed with watches. September 28.
